The Police Service in Ballymena have been issuing some great Christmas advice which includes this:
It sounds obvious but if you leave all your expensive presents wrapped up and underneath your Christmas tree it can be too big a temptation for opportunistic thieves. Also keep your home safe this Christmas by following this advice:
- Never place candles near your Christmas tree or near materials that can catch light easily (e.g. curtains)
- Keep candles, lighters and matches out of children’s reach
- Never leave burning candles unattended
- Never overload electrical sockets
- Always switch Christmas lights off and unplug them before you go out or go to bed
- Decorations can burn easily – so don’t attach them to lights or heaters
- Take time to check on elderly relatives and neighbours this Christmas as they are at greater risk from fire
- Make sure you, your family and visitors know how to escape in an emergency
