Façade retention in Belfast by Wilson and Mawhinney
Wilson and Mawhinney also constructed dwellings to the rear of the old bank building. Instead of losing the beautiful iconic bank building the construction contractors were able to incorporate the existing façade into the design. Façade retention is a popular technique which needs expertise and skill to carry out well. The existing façade is supported and maintained while the internal walls are taken down and rebuilt as per the new design.
This site also had other tricky factors which needed to be dealt with including high voltage electricity cables and a public right of way which traversed the site.
