Northern Ireland agricultural merchants Killyless Stores sell Digital Voltmeters. A Digital Voltmeter is something that is necessary for any farmers who use an electric fence on their farm. If you find that you electric fence isn’t performing as it should then a digital voltmeter can help you get to the bottom of what the problem is. It could be a short circuit in your electric fence or maybe the equipment is faulty. A digital voltmeter will help you to identify the problem quickly and easily
The PEL Digital Voltmeter enables accurate testing of your fence and energiser earth system.
To locate a fault in the fence line:
1 Push the black earth probe into the soil and clip the red fence clip to the live fence wire. (For a DVM with clips fitted, clip the black earth clip to the earth wire and the red fence clip to the live fence wire). Note the voltage reading for the entire fence.
2 Disconnect a section of the fence and take a voltage reading of the remainder of the fence. Repeat for each section of the fence. If the voltage reading is significantly higher than the reading for the entire fence, this indicates a fault in the disconnected section.
3 Within the faulty section, take voltage readings every 100 m (330í) until the fault is located.
and here is what to do it you want to measure the energiser output voltage.
1 Disconnect the fence wires from the energiser terminals.
2 Hold the black earth probe against the earth terminal. Clip the red fence clip to the energiser’s fence output terminal. (For a DVM with clips fitted, clip the black earth clip to the earth terminal and the red fence clip to the fence output terminal)
3 Take a voltage reading and compare with the manufacturers specifications for the energiser.
