Cooking Club at Ballymena Academy -Take 3

If you have been keeping up with the biz, you will know that I am currently going to a first time-ever ‘Cooking Club’ at my school, on Thursdays! We are in training for the ‘Whizz Kids’ competition coming in September/October time, and are practicing preparing a number of foods which test our different skills and abilities, pupils and teachers alike! Cooking Club at Ballymena Academy -Take 3 On a quiet Thursday, we made a fluffy, delicious Swiss Roll! I found making the sponge itself fairly easy, but it was the rolling that was trickier… See how you get on ! We...

Netty’s Vintage Tearoom

Cherry and I have been exploring again. We went to Netty’s Vintage Tearoom in Ahoghill! Netty’s Vintage Tearoom is a cute little tearoom – but it sells more than just tea! The teas they do sell include their “House Tea”, speciality teas and herbal, including peppermint, green tea and a ‘selection’! They do other drinks such as coffees, hot chocolates and even milkshakes! Lunch is available there too – they make paninis, soups, and baked potatoes! As part of their ‘Cold Selection’, they make scones, pancakes and sandwiches. And the best bit… they do traybakes! They do desserts, homemade traybakes,...

He-Brews Ballymena

Recently, Rachel from the Ballymena Today youth team decided that it would be a good idea to relax and meet up with a couple of friends for coffee and lunch in He-Brews, Ballymena…….. He-Brews is a coffee shop on Queen St, Ballymena, near Papa’s Kitchen, Boots and many other shops. It opened in September 2013 and I am surprised that I have not been there sooner! My visit to He-Brews Ballymena When I went in, I was immediately greeted by the smell of lovely food and a scene of cosiness, as I went and sat down to wait for my friends. There was a nice range of style in seating arrangements; there were retro wooden tables in the middle, with tall, orange seats by the window and huge comfy sofas scattered throughout. Of course, I was drawn to the sofas like a moth to the light! I sunk into one, and was surprised by how much it sunk down into a pit of comfiness… While I was waiting for my friends, I had time to look around me and see what there was. I must say, I absolutely love the interior design of the place. As well as incredible sofas, there were cool wall displays such as a guitar hanging up on the wall, bicycle wheels on the wall and even a bicycle itself was hanging on the wall! I...

Cooking Club at Ballymena Academy -Take 2

Rachel from the Ballymena Today Youth team shares her recipe from the Ballymena Academy Cooking Club. Over to her . . . As you may already know, my HE (Home Economics) department at Ballymena Academy has recently started a small cookery club for certain pupils interested in entering the “Whizz Kids” cookery competition in September/October time. There are roughly 6 groups of 2 pupils each in this club, and have been either chosen or recommended by an HE teacher at our school. In case you missed my last blog on ‘Death by Chocolate’ Salted Caramel Brownies, you can catch up here to...

Cooking Club at Ballymena Academy

Rachel from our Ballymena Today youth team has been involved in an exciting new club at Ballymena Academy. We will let her tell you all about it! On Thursday 2nd of June, it was the first time that there was a cooking club in Ballymena Academy. It was organised and arranged by one of our own HE Department teachers. It is being held in preparation for the upcoming ‘Whizz Kids’ competition, in September/October time. At the ‘club’ there were approximately 6-8 teams of 2 people and the pupils were either personally invited to come by our HE teacher involved, or had been recommended by other teachers. The main thing is, we all love baking! We are now meeting every Thursday after school until the end of the school year and we are going to be making a wide variety of dishes, ranging from delicious sweet deserts to main dishes, which you could have for dinner! For our first ‘club’ we made SALTED CARAMEL BROWNIES! We were so excited‼ It took about an hour to make in total, by both following a recipe and our teacher telling us all what to do as a whole group. We may not be Mary Berry or Jamie Oliver, but we still managed to make a “death by chocolate” fudgy brownie, designed to make your mouth water. Here’s the recipe which we used below, taken...
